FamilySearch Image Only Records

FamilySearch is in the process of digitizing records which means that they are scanning or using a digital camera to capture a digital copy of records which can then be viewed like a picture on a computer screen.

Indexing an image means transcribing the information or data from the image of the record into a data base. The database can then be searched by name or any other set of useful parameters depending on the record and what was indexed.

FamilySearch quickly realized that the indexing of the records was going to take far longer than the digitizing of the records. They asked the genealogical community if they would like access to the digital records even if they were not indexed. They answer was a resounding YES!

FamilySearch thus has given the public access to the digital records that have not been indexed. Finding them may be a little bit tricky however. In my class and the accompanying PowerPoint I show three different ways to access these records. These records can be a hidden Goldmine when you know how to start digging! So dig right in, learn, and find!
